Specializing in Gynecologic Oncology, Cancer Genetics, and Minimally Invasive Surgery
Rinki Agarwal, MD is originally from Mumbai, India. She always knew she wanted to be a doctor after she saw her grandmother recover from knee surgery with a new lease on life.
She received her medical degree from Mumbai, India, and continued to an OB/GYN residency in India. She then came to the United States to pursue a more advanced form of training. Having decided early that she wanted to do advanced training, she went through an OB/GYN residency at Yale New Haven Hospital. She then completed two fellowships in clinical genetics and gynecologic oncology.
She has over 25 years’ experience and practices the breadth of gynecologic oncology, including complex surgeries for gynecologic malignancies and benign conditions. She is an accomplished high-volume robotic surgeon, having performed hundreds of robotic surgeries. She also is the director for minimally invasive surgery. In this role, she works to enhance the expertise in minimally invasive surgery in the hospital system and directs training programs for residents in minimally invasive surgery.
In addition, she is the director of the Upstate Cancer Genetics Program and has an active practice in cancer genetics. This program serves as the regional center of excellence for cancer genetics in Central New York. Under her direction, the program is heavily engaged in patient care, patient education, training of genetics professionals, and research.
Dr. Agarwal has been cited under “Top Doctors” by Castle Connolly.
Dr. Agarwal has lived in Manlius for several years now and is happy to call Central New York home.
She is a member of American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO), American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG), and the American Medical Association (AMA). She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology, gynecologic oncology, and medical genetics.

Specializing in Gynecologic Oncology
Dr. Bunn is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and subspecialty certified in gynecologic oncology. Dr. Bunn specializes in the treatment of endometrial and uterine cancer, in addition to ovarian cancer.
He provides the entire spectrum of cancer care including chemotherapy, cryosurgery of the cervix, gynecologic laparoscopic surgery, hysterectomy, high dose rate (HDR) after loader brachytherapy, and surgical endoscopic procedures.

Specializing in General Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Minimally Invasive Surgery
Dr. Maureen Burke is a board-certified OB/GYN who joined Upstate in 2015 after completing her residency training in Connecticut. She specializes in complex GYN care, including management of abnormal pap smears, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal uterine bleeding, family planning, pediatric/adolescent gynecologic care, and minimally invasive hysterectomies. She also enjoys complex obstetrics. She has served as Assistant Program Director for the Upstate OB/GYN residency program since 2015, as Medical Director of the University OBGYN Associates Office since 2019, and as Generalist Division Chief since 2021.

Jerry Caporaso, Jr, M.D. is a native of Upstate New York and has been serving the Syracuse medical community for over 20 years. He completed medical school at SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse and Residency at Rochester General Hospital. Shortly after completing Residency, Dr. Caporaso went into private practice at The Hill OB-GYN Associates and devoted his career to providing exceptional care to patients of all demographics. Dr. Caporaso is Board Certified in Female Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and specializes in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. His professional specialty includes vaginal hysterectomy, pelvic floor reconstruction for bladder and uterine prolapse and urinary incontinence. When he is not practicing medicine, you can find Dr. Caporaso spending time with his family on beautiful Otisco Lake.

Dr. Cunningham is the Division Chief/Medical Director of the Gynecologic Oncology Division. She is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and subspecialty certified in gynecologic oncology.
Dr. Cunningham specializes in the treatment of cervical cancer, endometrial and uterine cancer, fallopian tube cancer, vaginal cancer, vulvar cancer, and ovarian cancer. She provides the full spectrum of cancer care including chemotherapy and gynecologic laparoscopic surgery.
Dr. Cunningham also supervises and oversees various clinical research trials for the gynecologic oncology specialty.

Specializing in General Obstetrics, Gynecology
Dr. Katherine Frega is the true definition of “serving the community that raised you”. A native of Upstate New York, Dr. Frega graduated summa cum lade from Syracuse University in 2016 and earned her medical degree at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2020. She has served as a Captain for the US Army Reserve since 2021 and was appointed to the SUNY Upstate Department of Ob/Gyn as a Clinical Assistant Professor after completing residency in 2024.
Throughout every level of education, Dr. Frega has exhibited a profound passion for teaching others and has been recognized with several awards for her exceptional impact on medical students. Her enthusiastic attitude towards medical education will be on display as she serves as the Ob/Gyn Associate Clerkship Director.
Dr. Frega’s clinical interests include minimally invasive GYN surgery, infertility, and pediatric/adolescent GYN. As a pediatric cancer survivor, she is passionate about onco-fertility and fertility preservation access for cancer patients and survivors. She is a legislative advocate for Resolve- the National Infertility Association and the Alliance for Fertility Preservation. Dr. Frega also enjoys caring for military members, veterans, and their families.
In her free time, Dr. Frega enjoys spending time with her husband and dog Albus outdoors- skiing, hiking, and running.

Specializing in Maternal and Fetal Medicine
Dr. John Nosovitch was appointed to the OB/GYN department at Upstate Medical University in November 1997. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and subspecialty certified in material and fetal medicine.
Dr. Nosovitch’s clinical interests include HIV in pregnancy, medical complications of pregnancy, and ultrasonography and diagnosis of fetal anomalies.

Dr. Semeran joined the OB/GYN department at Upstate Medical University in September 2020. With over 40 years of experience in obstetrics and gynecology as a private practitioner in group and solo practice settings, Dr. Semeran is a welcome addition to our team. Prior to joining our group, he was an adjunct clinical instructor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Specializing in General Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Michaela Sous is a board-certified OB/GYN passionate about reproductive justice and health equity. She received an undergraduate degree in French from Cornell University in 2014 and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University in 2018. She completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at SUNY Upstate Medical University in 2022. Subsequently, she pursued a two-year global health equity fellowship at the University of California San Francisco where she spent one year in rural Malawi with Partners in Health working bidirectionally with Malawian clinicians, and one year at a federally qualified health center in California serving marginalized immigrant and undocumented populations. Dr. Sous is also pursuing a Master of Public Health degree from the University of Liverpool, anticipated Summer 2025.
Throughout medical school, residency, and fellowship, Dr. Sous has been honored with numerous awards recognizing her commitment to providing respectful, equitable, evidence-based care to medically underserved populations across the globe. In the Fall of 2024, she joined the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as a Clinical Assistant Professor at SUNY Upstate Medical University, with a goal to bring specialized women’s healthcare services to the Upstate Center for International Health serving newly resettled refugees. Furthermore, she aims to develop global women’s health partnerships for bidirectional medical education. Her extensive training and clinical exposure will help provide the necessary tools and knowledge to improve the next generation of physicians as she serves as the Assistant Program Director for the Upstate OB/GYN Residency program.
Dr. Sous enjoys full-spectrum obstetrics and gynecology, with an emphasis on health equity, global health, family planning, and medical education. When she’s not practicing medicine or traveling the world, Dr. Sous enjoys spending time with her husband, cooking vegetarian food, bicycling around her neighborhood, and learning new cultures and languages.

Specializing in General Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Stanley joined the OB/GYN department at Upstate Medical University in July 1999. He is currently the Associate Director of the OB/GYN Clerkship Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University and is a member of our OB/GYN Generalist Division. Dr. Stanley specializes in high-risk obstetrics, high-risk cesarean sections, as well as family planning and contraceptive counseling. He also focuses on the evaluation and treatment of cervical dysplasia and the medical treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding. Dr. Stanley has a strong interest in many of the social justice aspects of women’s healthcare.

Dr. Brian Thompson was appointed to the OB/GYN department at Upstate Medical University in February 2004. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.
Dr. Thompson’s clinical interests include abnormal uterine bleeding, cervical dysplasia, menstrual disorders, and uterine fibroids. He is also interested in Native American healthcare and underserved patient populations.
