Pregnancy is supposed to be an exciting and memorable adventure. However, with the onslaught and the unabated surges of COVID-19, expectant mothers are instead shrouded in anxiety, fear, and uncertainty over their health and that of their unborn child.
Here are a few, simple strategies to help you navigate and ensure a healthy, successful pregnancy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
1.) Strengthen your immune system.
The importance of keeping your immune system strong during pregnancy—let alone during a global health crisis—cannot be overemphasized.
The following self-care measures will help give your immune system a good boost:
- Loading up on healthy foods
- Taking pregnancy supplements
- Staying hydrated
- Doing some light exercises
- Getting enough sleep
- Managing your stress
2.)Follow public health recommendations.
Listed below are the health recommendations set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
- As much as possible, limit in-person interactions with people outside of your household, especially those who you think might have been exposed to the virus.
- Make sure to wear a mask when going out or even when at home, if you have a family member who has had recent exposure to the virus.
- When going outside, stay away from people who are not wearing masks or ask those around you to wear masks that fully cover their mouth and nose.
- Observe six feet of distance between yourself and the people around you.
- Avoid frequenting crowded and poorly ventilated places.
- Keep your hands clean as often as necessary. Having a hand gel that contains at least 60% alcohol handy helps you keep your hands clean when water and soap are not available.
- Refrain from touching your eyes, mouth, and nose with unclean hands.
- Use the inside of your elbow or a tissue to cover coughs and sneezes. Sanitize your hands right away.
- Disinfect the surfaces and objects you touch often.
- Store at least a 30-day supply of nonprescription and prescription medications. Speak with your primary care provider, OB/GYN, or pharmacist about getting an extra supply, to reduce your trips to the pharmacy.
3.) Discuss the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine with your OB/GYN.
Talk to your obstetrician about the COVID-19 vaccine, particularly about its benefits and risks. This will help you make an informed decision.
If you choose to have the vaccine, it’s imperative to continue to take the necessary precautions mentioned above after getting it, so that you and your baby remain protected. Take note that it doesn’t guarantee absolute protection from the virus.
