The technician moves the transducer around to examine the uterus and check for abnormalities. The images are produced in real-time on a video display screen to which the transducer is attached. The technician will proceed to take pictures of the uterus for a radiologist and gynecologist to examine. The saline solution injected into the uterus will drain out after the procedure.
The procedure is very much like a gynecological exam, and involves no pain, anesthesia, and radiation exposure. At most, you will feel a bit of discomfort, but this will be as much as you would feel in a normal gynecological exam. Some women report experiencing cramping during and after the procedure. A sonohysterogram can produce more detailed pictures of soft tissues compared to an X-ray. It is recommended that the exam be performed a week after menstruation and is not recommended to women who are pregnant.
