Medical terms can be closely related and sound the same, but they are not always. If you have always thought Gynecology and Obstetrics were the same specialties, you’re not alone. Gynecology and obstetrics are closely related specialties in the OB/GYN field. Many people use the terms interchangeably or refer to their doctor as their OB/GYN, which stands for obstetrics and gynecology. In this article, we will describe the difference between Obstetrics and Gynecology.
What is Gynecology?
A gynecologist specializes in the reproductive system. Gynecologists are responsible for performing a variety of tests and exams focusing on reproductive health. A gynecologist performs an examination, consisting of a pap smear, perform STD tests, a breast exam (mammogram), and advise and prescribe birth control. Gynecologists also monitor hormone levels and diagnose conditions such as urinary tract infections, and cervical cancer (HPV). Gynecologists conduct examinations to make sure that there is nothing threatening a woman’s reproductive system, and if issues arise, gynecologists provide the correct form of treatment.
What is Obstetrics?
Obstetrics relates to the care of pregnant women. In other words, obstetricians do not treat diseases, they are responsible for treating women who are pregnant, monitoring their health from pre-natal care to delivery. This field encompasses everything from the pre-natal health of the fetus to the post-natal care to ensure that the mother and baby are recovering well. Obstetricians perform ultrasounds and other examinations to prevent and address complications that may arise during pregnancy and childbirth.
The study of the female reproductive system is complex, which is why the field of gynecology and obstetrics is split up in OB/GYN. Most doctors practice both obstetrics and gynecology. Women seek obstetrical and gynecological health at different stages in their life, and having regular checkups and ongoing care is important to ensure that any issues or concerns are addressed right away.
